Are you a communications geek?

Are you a communications geek?

I feel you probably know the answer to this already, but that’s no reason not to take our marvellous quiz*.

Let’s go…

At the entrance to your local shop, there is a notice that says “Do not enter without a facemask”. What are you thinking?

a) Better get the old facemask out…

b) That notice sounds a bit tetchy. A bit of humour wouldn’t have gone amiss. Made your customers smile while they reached for the mask – positive sentiment and all that.

c) Why is everyone in this shop staring at me?

When you open your email, what is your usual reaction?

a) Why have I got so many marketing emails?

b) That is a great hook, how can I use that?

c) Sports Direct has a saaaaaale!!!

The business development team is giving a presentation on the new sales strategy over Zoom and you are there to witness it.

a) Yes, this is good. It sounds like they know what they’re doing and where we’re going.

b) Those images are a bit generic and lacklustre. Not sure they’ve understood their audience here. And what font is that?!?

c) Wow, that is so close to my highest score on Candy Crush/Fifa

Instagram has changed its logo. What is your first reaction?

a) Where’s my insta icon gone?

b) Ooh, that gradient is super cool, wonder what the hex is…

c) What’s Instagram?

Back in the mists of time, we held company meetings in the canteen and the CEO got up to deliver some important news. Where were you looking?

a) At the CEO. Chirpy or sombre, I can usually tell from the look on their face what type of news is coming.

b) At the audience. It’s how news is received that’s important.

c) Hey, there’s chilli on the menu on Thursday. Brilliant.

The internal communication team has sent out an email with news…

a) News from the company? This is good. I like to know what’s going on around the place.

b) Hmm, same old, same old. Happy to share… positive news… one team… but where is the call to action?

c) An email from the communications team? I wouldn’t know. I’ve got an automatic rule set up in Outlook that sends them to spam.

So, what did you get?…

Mostly As – congratulations, you are a normal person. You are also who communication geeks have in their sights at all times, so be careful out there…

Mostly Bs – you are the archetypal communications geek. People will also refer to you as “that pedant over there”. It’s a cross you have to bear. Bear it with pride!

Mostly Cs – you are a no noticer. The bane of every communications person’s life, you dawnder through the world innocent of their increasingly frantic attempts to attract your attention. Hats off.
